Austin was later honored with a small gift by the local Ace Hardware store, but he insists he didn’t do it for praise.
“My wife shops here. My son works here,” he explained. “I just couldn’t let him get away.”
Community leaders and advocates have also praised the veteran’s courage. “We’re thankful someone took action,” said Doris Williams, director of the local crisis response center.
