Alcatraz, which operated as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963, is one of the most iconic incarceration sites in U.S. history, known for once housing high-profile inmates like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
“REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!” Trump wrote. “We must no longer accept repeat offenses and disruption in our communities.”
The proposal represents the latest in a series of criminal justice and immigration enforcement plans Trump has shared as part of his broader platform.
He also criticized what he views as overly lenient judicial policies, writing: “We must ensure that the legal system works for the protection of law-abiding citizens and not those who violate the law.”
He concluded, “The reopening of Alcatraz will stand as a symbol of law, order, and accountability. We will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Despite the bold rhetoric, the plan faces significant obstacles. Alcatraz, located on an island in San Francisco Bay, was closed in 1963 primarily due to high operating costs and logistical challenges.
