ICONS implied in a letter to the US Masters Swimming (USMS) board that they had broken their own fair play rules by permitting Caldas to compete. Caldas has been contacted for comment by DailyMail.com.
To compete against biological females, the board requires trans women to have had hormone therapy and have testosterone levels below 5 nmol/L.
“The competition’s integrity and the confidence of all USMS athletes depend on transparency in these matters,” the ICONS letter said. It should not be a rule allowing males to compete in women’s swimming because there is no time frame in which testosterone suppression eliminates masculine advantage.
“It is the duty of USMS to enforce its current policy, at the very least.” ICONS informed Reduxx that their email raising concerns was not answered by USMS. ICONS has been contacted by DailyMail.com to confirm.
Riley Gaines, a former professional swimmer and conservative political activist, criticized Caldas’ victories as “a real life South Park episode,” which presents a humorous perspective on the world.
