In a statement at the time of her sentence, her public defender stated that Gifford harbored resentment toward his mother and that his account of what happened was riddled with contradictions.
According to the note, Doreene was raised by violent parents who were frequently in and out of jail, went through an abusive foster system as a child,
married an abusive spouse, and eventually abused crystal meth.
After being freed on parole in July of last year, Doreene was arrested once more in January for contacting a victim in violation of one of the conditions of her release.
