Footage Reveals Moments Following the Selection of Pope Leo XIV as the First American Pope

Footage has emerged showing the heartfelt reactions of the Cardinals when Robert Prevost was elected as the new pope.

Cardinal Robert Prevost was selected as the leader of the Catholic Church following the passing of Pope Francis. The video, shared on social media by Vatican News, captures Pope Leo XIV greeting and embracing many of the Cardinals who congratulated him.

The footage shows the 69-year-old leaving the Sistine Chapel, as well as moments where he kneels for a private prayer at a prie-dieu.

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is the first American to take on the significant role of leading the Catholic Church.

He previously served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023 and was the general of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013.
