Only a few weeks after Robinson’s comments were made public, Bezos declared that he was revamping the Opinion section and that David Shipley, the opinion editor, had been fired for not supporting the move.
After her new superiors refused to allow her to publish an article criticizing Bezos for meddling in the editorial process, veteran columnist Ruth Marcus announced her retirement from the paper in the weeks that followed. The piece was later published in The New Yorker.
Marcus said in her column, “I felt that it was important to put my reasons for disagreement on the record,” before complaining that Bezos and Will Lewis, the new opinion editor, were “dangerously eroding” journalistic freedoms.
