The incident has prompted local health officials to issue warnings about hookworm infections,
particularly in sandy areas frequented by animals, as the parasites are often transmitted through animal feces.
Authorities are also increasing efforts to educate the public about the dangers of walking barefoot in certain areas and the importance of maintaining proper hygiene.
“You know your own body,” Emily said. “If you feel like something is wrong, don’t let anyone dismiss you. Push for answers until you get them.”
The couple plans to return to the beach eventually — but only after investing in sturdy, protective footwear.
