On Thursday, May 8, white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, signaling that the papal conclave had successfully elected a new pope following the passing of Pope Francis.
Shortly after, 69-year-old Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was introduced to the world as Pope Leo XIV, appearing on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
A few interesting facts about the 267th pope: he is the first American to hold the position, having been born in Chicago, and he spent much of his life in Peru as a missionary.
While many may picture the new pope as solely focused on religious duties, it turns out he has some everyday hobbies too, including games and movies.
The surprising revelation came from his older brother, John Prevost, a retired Catholic school principal, who shared some insights with NBC News.
He said: “First, we play Wordle together because that’s something we always do, and then we play Words With Friends. It helps him unwind and take his mind off of everything.”
