DOJ settles with family of woman fatally shot by police during January 6 Capitol riot

The Department of Justice has reached a settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt, the woman fatally shot during the January 6 Capitol riot in Washington, D.C.

The settlement was announced in a court filing on Friday, stating that both sides had “reached an agreement in principle” in the wrongful death case.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran, was among the individuals who breached the Capitol building during the certification of the 2020 election.

She attempted to climb through a broken window leading into the Speaker’s Lobby, an area restricted to protect lawmakers during the chaos.

At that moment,

Capitol Police Lieutenant Michael Byrd fired one shot, striking Babbitt in the shoulder. She later died from her injuries.
