President Trump orders reopening of infamous U.S. prison to detain ‘the most dangerous elements of society’

Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to reopen the historic Alcatraz prison as part of a broader push to address crime and reform the federal prison system.

In a statement posted to Truth Social on Sunday evening, Trump revealed that he is directing the Bureau of Prisons, in collaboration with the Department of Justice,

the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security, to reestablish and significantly expand the long-shuttered island facility.

“For too long, America has faced challenges with repeat criminal offenders,” Trump wrote. “In the past, when we were a more serious nation,

we didn’t hesitate to keep the most dangerous individuals in secure, isolated facilities. That’s how it should be.”

He continued, “Today, I am instructing federal law enforcement and corrections agencies to reopen and modernize Alcatraz — a secure facility to house individuals who pose the greatest threat to public safety.”
